John Prentis Sartelle was born in 1944 to Dr. and Mrs. Preston Sartelle, Sr. in San Diego, CA. John’s father served the Lord in various capacities, including minister, teacher, writer, chaplain and evangelist, and in doing so had significant influence on John's future endeavors.
After graduating from King College, John was called in 1969 to minister Cedar Bluff Presbyterian Church in Southern Virginia, which at the time was part of the Presbyterian Church USA (PCUSA). In 1972 Cedar Bluff divided with the majority of the congregation forming Covenant Presbyterian Church as an early member church of the newly established Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) denomination. In this and other ways, John was very involved in the establishment of the PCA.
In 1977, John was called to minister Independent Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Memphis, TN. The Lord blessed Independent greatly during John’s 27 years there, as the congregation grew from 300 to over 2,300, and numerous ministries developed and flourished. During his time at Independent, John also authored the often referenced booklet What Christian Parents Should Know About Infant Baptism, published in 1985.
Under the leading of the Holy Spirit, John concluded in early 2005 that the work God had called him to do at Independent was complete and he announced his plans to resign. In the Lord’s intriguing providence, TCPC contacted John just prior to that public announcement and asked him to consider a call to TCPC.
John comes to Lexington with Janet, his wife of 40 years. Together John and Janet have three children: Sara Jill (married to Douglas Doster), John Prentis Jr. (married to Ashley Tucker), and Jamie Maclaren (married to Robert Denovo).
